DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne Public Library has changed the time of its regular “Jubilee Mornings” speaker series, which met at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month in the library’s Community Room. The rebranded “Jubilee Afternoons” gatherings are set for 2 p.m., at the same frequency, beginning Wednesday.
“We’ve been seeing that attendance has been down,” reference librarian Anne Morris said.
“What we found out is that many of the local groups meet at the same time,” director Tonja Young said of Jubilee Mornings. “There’s no sense in having it at a time when everyone couldn’t come.”
Morris cited scheduling conflicts with the Daphne Senior Center and Recreation Center.
Some attendees had suggested the meeting time be changed so they could make it to lunch on time, Morris said.
“The senior center has lunch at 11:30. (With the new time,) we’ll be able to accomodate people after lunch,” she said.
The later meeting time will also allow senior citizens to attend the senior center’s 10 a.m. bridge class.
“We wanted to present the program when the most people could come,” Morris said. “We’re hoping that people will enjoy coming out at 2.”
Guest author at the first Jubilee Afternoons session will be Margaret Cunningham, whose first novel, ”Lily in Bloom,” set on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, will be published May 1.
She has contributed short stories to the popular “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series.
So, though the library’s changed the series’ hours, it hasn’t skimped on talent.
“We’re still going to have good authors and writers,” Morris said. “We’re just trying to accord to people’s schedules.”
“Jubilee Afternoons” is free and open to the public. Friends of the Daphne Public Library will provide light refreshments and coffee.
