Lifelong Daphne resident, noted cook dies

Posted

Ulysee Sexton Thompson, a lifelong Daphne resident, died July 31 in her home at age 92.

Thompson died three days after her daughter, Elouise McDonald, was buried at Greater Montrose AME Church Cemetery.

Funeral services for Thompson were held at the Greater Montrose AME Church in Montrose on Aug. 4.

Pastor Cleitis Walker delivered the eulogy.

Thompson was known as the “Best Cook in the State of Alabama,” according to a certificate of remembrance signed by Gov. Bob Riley.

Thompson’s motto was “to feed everyone that was hungry,” according to André V. McConico, the Bailey family historian.

Most of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives had joined her at the 1st Bailey-Sexton Family Reunion Banquet.

That event was held July 6 at Daphne Bayfront Park.
