Take action against cancer at Central Baldwin Relay for Life Nov. 4 at Honeybee Park

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Central Baldwin residents are ready for their close-ups in the fight against cancer at the annual Central Baldwin Relay for Life, which will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 at Honeybee Park in Robertsdale.

“Lights, Camera, Cure! Take Action Against Cancer” is the theme for the annual event, sponsored by H & R Block.

“We just want everyone to come out and help fight for a cure,” said event organizer Jessica Devine with Lee Drug Store, one of the event’s Gold Sponsors, along with Salac Farms in memory of Jami Salac.

The event raised about $35,000 last year, Devine said, with the goal of raising $40,000 this year. The event has been moved up a week from previous years but will still include many of the activities of past years, including the womanless beauty pageant and chili cook-off.

Additional sponsors include:

Lighting sponsor: United Rentals; entertainment sponsor: Tim Brown Entertainment; survivorship sponsors: Central Glass Company Inc., Ponder Landscape, Chad Stapleton Catering, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Scott Funk and Carl Myrick; Gulf Winds Realty & Development LLC, Safe Span LLC, Café Acadiana and Morgan’s Ice.

Bronze sponsors are the city of Robertsdale and Rotary International.

Friends of Relay are Adams Stewart Architects, Data Trust Technologies, Mack Funeral Home, Mitchell Landscape & Concrete, in memory of Linda Resmondo, Frenchie’s Cajun Café, Mike & Johnny’s, Murphy’s Custom Hay, Stastka Insurance Agency, Gear Jammers Car Club, the Fordham family, Maintenance Solutions in memory of Mary Walker, Middleton Auto Parts, Triple B Convenience Store, First Assembly of God, Robertsdale, Joyce Bankester, Trendz Hair Salon and Gruenloh & Associates, Cheryl Russell, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Cooper & Co. and Samuel L. Driver, C.P.A.

“We want to particularly thank all of our sponsors for their support,” Devine said. “Without them none of this would be possible.”

So far, 15 teams have signed up for this year’s event, Devine said, and you can still sign up your team at relayforlife.org/centralbaldwin, or just come out, have fun and donate.

A survivor’s dinner will be prior to the event beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday at the PZK Civic Center in Robertsdale. The event is free for all survivors and one caregiver.

Food for the survivor’s dinner will be provided by Chad Stapleton Catering, Café Acadiana, Ivey’s Fine Dining, Jena Hawsey, Carla Lucas Cakes and Publix.

As always, the Nov. 4 event will kick off with a survivor lap during the opening ceremonies. You can sign up as a survivor and participate in the walk, “an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer.”

The lap also serves to recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay for Life.

Teams participating in the chili cook-off will be set up around the park and for $5, you get a bowl and spoon to sample as much chili as you want. Pick your favorite chili (or your favorite team) and donate. The winner is the team that raises the most money.

A luminaria ceremony will be at 8 p.m. There will also be opportunities to purchase luminarias, which can be done in memory of a loved one lost to cancer, or in honor of a cancer survivor, Devine said. Visit the website for more information.

People who have been touched by cancer and loved ones lost to the disease will be remembered during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer and participants often walk a lap in silence.

There will also be a scavenger hunt, a performance by the CBMS cheerleaders, with the ever-popular womanless beauty pageant closing out the event at 9 p.m.

Teams are asked to select a “contestant” that will be given a set of clothes and props to use any way they wish (in a family-friendly way within the bounds of good taste, of course). Contestants will then parade throughout the grounds collecting donations and whomever collects the most donations is declared the winner.

You can sign up your team online or for more information contact Devine at 251-947-7378 or email leedrugstore@gmail.com. You can also visit the Central Baldwin Relay page on Facebook.
