ROBERTSDALE – The Foley Lions proved once again why they are ranked No. 3 in the state, stretching their undefeated streak to eight games (8-0, 5-0 6A Region 2) with a crushing win over the Robertsdale Golden Bears 42-14 on the road.

And as with all Lions’ games this year, they put the points on the scoreboard fast, scoring on their opening drive -12 plays trudging 70 yards down field – within five minutes of first quarter action.

Senior quarterback Devin Smith, who threw 20-of-31 for 261 yards and two touchdowns for the evening, capped the drive off with a 7-yard bullet to Mike Washington, giving the Lions an early 7-0 edge, which would be the first of a string of mostly unanswered touchdowns throughout the game.

Smith completed his first seven passes in a row and finished the first half on 13-of-20 passing with 170 yards and two touchdowns.

On the Lions second drive, the Golden Bears (0-8, 0-5) forced a fumbled, recovered by Wesley Givens, in their opponent’s territory on the 28-yard line.

The opportunity wouldn’t pan out for Robertsdale’s offense with the Lions’ formidable defense - which held defending class 3A state-runner up Pine Forest, Fla. scoreless last week – shutting down the Bears drive and forcing a punt.

And the punt would unfortunately turn into a folly as the Golden Bears quarterback slash punter, Nathan Wells, dropped the pigskin when he attempted to kick it away. LaVance Mitchell pounced on the ball, running into the endzone for an easy 25-yard score, taking the Lions’ up 14-0 near the end of the first quarter.

The Lions’ defense would hold the Golden Bears to a meager 83-yards of total offense in the first half.

But the Golden Bears would strike back quick, driving from their own 23-yard line deep into Lions’ territory with only minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Wells connected on a 24-yard bomb to wide receiver Cameron Cason, taking his team the closest they would get to the steam rolling Lions - 14-7 with 1:04 remaining in the half.

The Golden Bears’ senior quarterback threw 6-of-17 with 56 yards and one touchdown for the evening.

Wideout phenom Julio Jones spent the entire game on the sidelines, recovering from an aggravated ankle injury against the Daphne Trojans.

In the second half, the Lions’ literally ran away with the game scoring three times on the ground: a 3-yard and 8-yard goal line rush by LaVance Mitchell and a 1-yard dive courtesy of Jonathan Wesley.

Mitchell carried the ball twelve times for 78 yards.

The Lions’ offense racked up 368 yards of total offense for the game with 200 yards coming by half-time from an effective mix of short-to-medium range passes and unstoppable running through wide-open holes created by the offensive line.

Next week, the Lions hit the road again to Bay Minette in a match-up against Baldwin County and the Golden Bears head to Daphne against the sixth-ranked Trojans.
