Local business will present school with grant

ELBERTA – Dollar General will present Elberta Middle School with a grant on Saturday, Sept. 10, that will be used in connection with the school’s reading programs.

Rebecca Crafton, manager of the Elberta store, said the check presentation ceremony will in all likelihood take place around 8 a.m. Dollar General is located at 24681 U.S. Highway 98.

While Crafton said Dollar General stores collect monies “everyday” for literacy programs such as the South Baldwin Literacy Council in Foley, the grant for EMS was the result of the local store and its employees “wanting to make certain Elberta got every penny.”

Crafton didn’t want to divulge the dollar amount of the grant ahead of time.

Crafton said she and others with Dollar General petitioned the company’s corporate office about using the literacy funds collected at the local store for EMS’s reading program, and Dollar General came up with the grant idea for the local school.

“This is a great thing,” Crafton said of the grant, adding, “We help them all yearlong.”

The grant presentation will take place on a day when the store will be holding other activities for literacy. From 8 a.m. to noon, a dunking booth will be held for literacy with store patrons getting the chance to dunk members of the Elberta Police Department. Also, funds from a hot dog lunch will also go to literacy.
