SEMINOLE, Ala. — Fashion designer… magazine publisher…television producer…booking agent…mover and shaker.

All these names describe Faye Phillips, the epitome of a Southern Renaissance woman who makes her home in Seminole but has been all over the country in her career.

And although she has been in the publishing business since 2007, she is branching out into the television market with a local cable show “F.A.M.E.” (Fashion, Arts, Music, Entertainment) based on her magazine of the same name.

With an air date of late April on WFGX 35-My Network, an affiliate of WEAR-3 (ABC) scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings, “F.A.M.E.” will have a coverage area of Mobile and Baldwin Counties, coastal Mississippi and the panhandle of Florida, Phillips said.

Promoting area businesses in Baldwin County and Mobile County, F.A.M.E., April/May issue features an old-style Hollywood glamour cover with Rock Hudson, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor look-alikes. The other pages will feature local artists, entertainment, fashion advertising and local music hot spots.

With Hattiesburg, Ms roots, Philips graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1982 with a B.A. in Fashion Merchandising and then spent a year in New York City working as a fashion designer for Norma Kamali OMO.

“That was a magical time and my very first customer was Raquel Welch. I saw so many big name stars while I was there. It was great,” Phillips said.

Returning to Mississippi to get married, Phillips taught at USM for seven years Fashion Show Production and Self-Confidence classes and was also designing her own line of clothing, “Faye Wray Designs”, the name coming from the famous actress who played the damsel in distress opposite King Kong.

“I have been a fan of hers forever and I also favor her so I adopted the nickname and it stuck,” Phillips said. Her production company also bears the name too, “Faye Wray Enterprises.”

He design line, with the logo “Dare to Be Unique”, focuses on jackets, vests, denim skirts and jeans, “vintage” hats, gloves and handbags made from all kinds of different materials, ribbons, medals, mardi gras items, beads and sequins.

“My favorite things are Mardi Gras, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley so I try to combine those elements in my designs and give them a unique twist. I use all kinds of recycled items on my clothing and call them ‘‘junk jackets’,” Phillips said.

As her design career took off, Phillips relocated to Phoenix and became a spokesperson for the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Los Angeles campus and enlisted the help of a partner to create her wearable art.

“I was so busy making my jackets, I had to have some help to complete all the orders or I would not have been able to do it. I also encouraged people to bring in their own materials to create a custom design to fit their personality,” Phillips said.

While Phillips was creating her designs, she was also writing poetry and when she moved back to Mississippi, her aunt read some of it and encouraged her to have it published.

“My sweet aunt was 84 and told me she knew some people in publishing in New Orleans and she introduced me to Lou Hannum. He loved my stuff and got my poetry pub;published and that gave me the inspiration to start a career in advertising and publishing and my magazine began as a vision in my head and then became reality with Lou’s help,” Phillips explained.

Another accomplishment Phillips is proud of is being selected as a candidate for the National Association of Professional Women in 2010. “This means so much to me and shows me what I’m doing is important and worthwhile.”

She also keeps busy with her booking company, Talents of LA.(Lower Alabama) and manages many local bands and musicians.
