Local police departments see outpouring of community support

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Robertsdale Police Chief Brad Kendrick considers himself blessed to live and work where he does.

“We just don’t have incidences happen like that here that they have in other parts of the country,” Kendrick said of the recent shootings involving police officers. “I consider myself blessed to have had such a good mayor and council to work with over the years. And I am so blessed to be surrounded by good people.”

But after recent attacks involving police around the country, particularly the shooting of several police officers in Dallas, Kendrick and his officers, along with officers throughout the area, have seen an outpouring of support from residents.

“We have simply been overwhelmed with people coming by with gifts and just expressing their appreciation,” Kendrick said.

Among those gift items listed in a post on RPD’s Facebook page, area gift cards to local restaurants, fish trays from Bethel Baptist Church, watermelons, sacks of Krystals, trays from Subway, pizzas from Pizza Hut, bottled water, beef jerky and a variety of sweets, pound cakes and candy.

“We are blessed to have such wonderful people supporting (the police department),” according to the post. “We are overwhelmed by all the support, thank you all, God Bless!”

And they are certainly not alone.

Signs have been spotted on fences and in front yards around Silverhill and Loxley, proclaiming their support for their local police departments.

“We’ve had a lot of people coming in and giving us stuff,” said Silverhill Police Chief Kevin Brock, “and when we are out places, like the local restaurant, people will come up and pat us on the back, telling us how much they appreciate us.”

After being on the job just a couple months, taking over a department that was itself surrounded by turmoil, Brock said the support has been a welcome sight.

“I have always loved Silverhill, always loved living here,” Brock said. “The community support that we have received over the past few weeks just reinforces that.”

For Police Chief John “Chip” Cason and the Loxley Police Department, the outpouring of support from the community is nothing new.

“Quite frankly, it has been happening more frequently since the Dallas shooting, but we have always had the support of our community,” he said. “We have had church groups bringing us baked goods and things like that on a regular basis for years. We have some of the best people around and we really appreciate them, too.”
