What started 12 years ago as only a part-time beauty consultant job for Diane Payne, Mary Kay Sales Representative, eventually turned into a full-time career she could operate from home while she and her husband raised four children. According to Payne, the secret to her success is having the right priorities.

“We put God first, family next, and our careers last. Mary Kay is a Christian organization and it spills over into over into our family life,” Payne said.

“When your children can see their mom enjoy what she is doing by setting and achieving goals, it sets an example for them to follow.”

Payne has also been afforded opportunities she might not have been otherwise afforded. For one, her career allows for flexibility to trave. In fact, she takes about two major trips annually. And there are other lucrative awards she has received, such as earning four diamond rings and “Cinderella” prizes like sets of luggage and furniture.

But for Payne, the most meaningful rewards are those that are intangible. She has appeared four times in the National Court of Sales in Dallas and has been able to make a number of friends and acquaintances along the way.

“I’m proud to have a wonderful unit of loving, caring women to work with,” said Payne.

Even though Payne’s business has been well established for years, she still takes every opportunity to make it grow. Part of that plan was joining the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce just under a year ago. She says she has been pleased with her decision and is pleased about how the Chamber helps the small business owner. Since her membership, they have helped to promote her business and she has earned new customers.

“I love that I haven’t had a car payment in almost 10 years,” Payne said. She earned her first Mary Kay car in 1998 and received her fifth car in 2006.

For Payne, owning a home-based business has been rewarding but she admits there were some difficulties along the way.

“The most challenging aspect is just having enough hours in the day to get it all done,” Payne said.

Payne shares her success with many other representatives in her sales unit. She represents a total of 53 women in her unit that stretches across Alabama and includes parts of Missouri and Texas. In Bay Minette, there are currently 40 women who are a part of her unit.

This month, each of the consultants in her unit is participating in the national Mary Kay “Model of Beauty” Search. They have been interviewing women as they give them make-overs. Payne reports she has had 13 customers to enter the search.

Participants in the search have a chance to win a trip for two in New York City, a $500 shopping spree in New York City, a professional photo shoot alsong with the opportunity to appear as a “Model of Beauty” in “The Look.”

There will be 45 runners-up who will receive products from the new Mary Kay Body Care Collection.

The deadline for entering the contest that celebrates Mary Kay’s 45th anniversary is Sept. 15.
