Locals hope to impress at Max Emfinger All American game

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Several local football players from around Baldwin and Mobile County are getting another look by college recruiters tomorrow in Baton Rouge, La.

The eighth annual Max Emfinger’s All American Bowl Game Classic will kick off at 11 a.m. at Southern University's A.W. Mumford Stadium with players from Baldwin County High, Daphne, Fairhope, Foley, Escambia County, Ala., McGill-Toolen Catholic, Robertsdale and Spanish Fort on the same roster.

The annual game invites seniors who have not committed, received a lot of attention or serious offers for college scholarships a chance to basically audition for hundreds college scouts.

The Baldwin participants will play on the East team said recruiting coordinator Mike Ebert who got involved with the program after seeing many talented and deserving athletes get little or no recognition, especially those who could not afford college without scholarship help.

Last year, Daphne’s Michael Pierce, Israel Lamprakes and Kendal Minniefield, along with Foley’s Darius Powell were selected to play in the seventh annual Max Emfinger’s All-American Bowl Game Classic.

Wes Chandler will coach the East team this year. Chandler is an NFL Hall of Famer and played wide receiver at The University of Florida and in the NFL. Former New Orleans Saints All-Pro (1993) Tyrone Hughes will coach the West.

Local players include: Hunter Vaughn, Chasen Hadley, Jacob Lee and David Dalton of Robertsdale; Tanner Martin, Alex Sealy, Elias Petties, Charles Carter, Brent McDonald, Scott Dacus and Kyron Samuels of Fairhope; Wyatt Hubbard and Woodham Taylor of Foley; Trey Roberts of McGill-Toolen; Donald Mix, Andre Pigrum, Chris Norman, Jonathan Jordan, Montrey Thornton and Dalton Overstreet of BCHS. Jordan Ebert of BCHS was invited to play but declined having accepted a baseball scholarship to Auburn University; Matthew Harris of Spanish Fort; Cole Boatwright and Rico Stallworth of Escambia County (Atmore) and Jeremy Sparks of Daphne.

Ebert said the impact of an extra look for some players and their families can be huge in a game like this.

“Max has been many young men’s last hope for an education. I have been involved for three years and I have seen the evidence of lives changed due to this bowl game.”

Ebert cited Vaughn who played quarterback for the Robertsdale Bears and despite good stats had no offers until he accepted the invitation to play tomorrow and is now verbally committed to Savannah State University in Georgia.

According to Emfingers 2012 Classic press guide, of the 666 players invited to the game since it’s beginnings, 418 who had no offers before, have since been recruited.

Emfinger also hosts national 7-on-7 (pass only) championship tournaments to help skill players highlight their talents.
