FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Ember Langley is a busy person. She’s president of
the senior class at Fairhope High School, vice president of the
student council, co-editor of the campus newspaper, member of the
National Honor Society and works on “Visions,” a campus art and
literature magazine.
Langley keeps an active social life as well. She likes the guitar,
music, photography, meeting people and smiling.
She’s just too busy to find a prom date. What is a busy, creative
modern young woman to do?
If you are Langley, you aim high. You ask Nicholas Jerry Jonas, an
actor better known as Nick Jonas of the hit-making Jonas Brothers, to
the prom. And you do it by modifying “Introducing Me,” from “Camp
Rock 2,” one of the Jonas Brothers’ songs, to ask him out.
Oh, and then post a video of you singing it on YouTube for the entire
world to see.
Langley is the first to say that her chances of getting the teen
heartthrob to escort her to the prom are slim.
“Technically, he is an attractive young man of good faith and
values,” she said. “What is not to like? This is not an act of
desperation, it’s a quirky thing to do.”
But, she says having Jonas on her arm at the dance’s “call-outs”
would be a coup. And she’s not interested in anything more. She
sings, “I’m wearing white to my wedding, because there’s something
nobody’s getting …” She adds that Jonas wears a “purity ring,” an
indication that he, too, will abstain from sex until marriage.
You can see the video by going to http://youtu.be/Kq10q2DFNmE. As of
this writing, the video posted in late December has received more
than 18,350 hits.
So far, she has not heard from Jonas, but Langley says, “everyone has
had a positive reaction.”
And if Jonas does not take her up on her offer, she is open to a date
from other young men her age.
“I hope to be asked by somebody,” said Langley, adding, “That person
should not at all think he’s second best. I like people and it will
be fun to go.”
After Fairhope High, Langley isn’t exactly sure what she will do.
She’s been accepted to Samford, the University of Mobile, Auburn, the
University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Belmont University in Nashville,
Tenn. and the University of Pennsylvania.
But Samford may have the edge.
“I love Birmingham,” she says. “It is a big city, but has a quaintness.”
She hopes to become a registered dietician and journalist. She
credits her mother with her interest in nutrition.
She says being the “youngest grandchild” has enabled her to observe
older people and “see the ones that are happy and the ones who are
not so happy.” She has noticed that nutrition plays a big role in how
people feel.
And journalism fascinates her.
“I love to write,” she says. She “totally loves” working on the
newspaper staff.
However, there is one problem — the software used for newspaper
layout and design.
“I just can’t sit still and look at a computer screen,” she said.
