DAPHNE, Ala.—The Trojans split a split doubleheader Friday finishing with a 4-0 shutout of Cullman in the nightcap after a 9-2 loss to St. Luke’s at Daphne High.
Daphne senior Tyler Lowery pitched a no-hit shutout against the Bearcats with 12 strikeouts and no walks to improve to 2-0. An error behind him allowed one runner to reach to prevent the perfect game.
The Trojans supported him at the plate with an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and finished with six hits. Trent Brunies, Blake Carnley, Tanner Lee and Khalil Yelding had singes and Dalton Filotei had two hits including a single to score Brennan Cunningham. Brunies, Justin Comerford and Chase Crump also drove in runs.
Friday was also the debut of Daphne coach Owen Davis as the Trojans interim head coach. Davis replaced Joe Hutchins in a rare mid-season change of command. Davis played at Daphne while Hutchins was an assistant to Mike Power. Davis graduated in 2002. Hutchins took over as head coach in 2003 and remains on the English faculty.
“It’s been a tough week for all of us,” Davis said. “I told the players that I love coach Hutch. I played for him. But sometimes things don’t work out and you have to keep going.”
Davis added that he was proud of the players for coming back from the first game.
“Tyler Lowery did a great job. Can’t ask for better from a pitcher. Defense did a great job and we attacked the ball at the plate. Proud of how they all came back and stayed focused and got it done for us. It’s hard to shutout a good team like Cullman.”
Lowery said his defense deserves to share the credit.
“Without my defense I could not be here,” he said. “Knowing I have Tanner Lee (short-stop) behind me and Chase Crump my catcher doing a great job, calling my signs—it just gives you a lot of confidence out there. Brennan always helps me out, too.
"And my curveball was working for me tonight. I called that on a couple of counts and my change-up on the lefty batters helped me work inside.”
In the loss to St Luke’s, DHS took a 1-0 lead but fell behind 2-1 in the third. The Wildcats later scored seven runs in the sixth to ensure the win for Brandon Cook who allowed just two Trojan hits. Cook also drove in a pair of runs off two hits as did Jeremiah Jackson.
Daphne’s Tevin Rencher singled and scored the first Trojan run and Trent Brunies added one in the sixth.
The Trojans are set to host Baker in a Mardi Gras doubleheader Tuesday at noon and 2 p.m.
