LOXLEY, Alabama --- After taking a summer break, Joey Knight, director and events coordinator, and Beryl Allen, senior activities director at the Loxley Civic Center, are ready for a busy fall.
“We’ve got a lot going on here,” Knight said. “We’ve got everything but the kitchen sink and we’re working on that.”
Beginning in September, the Civic Center will be packed with activities, including exercise classes, breakfast and lunch gatherings, art classes and several club activities.
“What we’re hoping is that we can revive support for the various activities that we have,” Knight said. “When it comes to social gatherings, it seems like everyone wants to come out and be involved, but then we don’t have a lot of support for other activities. We want to let everyone know these activities are available to anyone who wants to participate.”
The Civic Center kicked off the fall season with a Labor Day dance, which was well attended, Knight said. Pat Crumbie hosts holiday dances at the Civic Center and future dances will be posted on the town’s website.
On Monday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, the Civic Center will host Rick Zapata, Regional Extension Agent for Consumer Science and Personal Finance Management with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s southwest region, which includes Baldwin, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe and Washington counties.
Zapata will offer ideas about what and how to store personal records and information, Allen said.
On Oct. 20 the Robertsdale High School Class of 1957 will hold its reunion at the Center.
The Civic Center will also host a Veterans Day program Nov. 9. All veterans and their families are invited to enjoy lunch at the Civic Center. Then later, the City Rhythm Big Band will host its monthly free concert, which will feature patriotic selections.
On Nov. 17, Ebeneezer Baptist Church and Pine Grove Baptist Church will host a community Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone in the surrounding communities is invited to attend, Knight said.
On Dec. 8, the Civic Center and Loxley Municipal Park will host Christmas in the Park following the 10 a.m. Christmas parade. Then later, the City Rhythm Big Band will host its holiday show at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center.
The Center also hosts Planet Wrestling the first Saturday of every month. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 12. Admission is free for children under 5. The next events are scheduled for Oct. 6 and Nov. 3 at the Civic Center.
The Civic Center will also play host to Denise Kendrick’s Dance Academy, which will meet every Tuesday afternoon.
Kendrick, the daughter of Maxine Smith, founder of Green Acres School of Dance, is a member of Dance Masters of America. She will offer instruction in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, acro-gym, Mommy & Me, and baton. For more information contact Kendrick at 251-947-3372.
The Civic Center also hosts daily, weekly and monthly activities, including:
Many activities, Knight said, are open to senior members, age 55 and older. Club membership is $10 per person or $15 per couple. Free honorary memberships are also available to club members aged 90 and older. Anyone interested in Club membership can contact Allen at 251-964-4995.
Other activities are open to all area residents, both in Loxley and the surrounding communities, Knight said. A complete calendar of events is listed on the town’s website townofloxley.org posted under Senior Activities or by calling Knight at 251-964-7733.
