Loxley council appoints new police chief

LOXLEY, Ala. — The Loxley Town Council voted at its regular meeting to confirm Chip Cason as the town’s new police chief.

“During his time as interim chief Chip Cason has been working diligently with me and has done an outstanding job,” said Loxley Mayor Billy Middleton. “We have spoken daily at times and have had some in-depth discussions about what the job entails and some ideas we’ve had.”

Middleton then concluded, “I think he’ll do a good job. He has proven to me that he is capable of doing the job, and I think he will.”

The Council then voted unanimously to elect Cason as the Police Chief of the Town of Loxley; and as the Yeas won it, the chambers of the Town Hall clamored with congratulations and applause. Cason, a sharply dressed and well-spoken gentleman, graciously accepted the appointment and humbly acknowledged the Council’s approval.

Middleton then explained that the Chief’s appointment is for one term, which ends at this time next year. At that time, Cason will have to be re-appointed by the Council, a standard procedure for any Loxley council position. The Council and their new police chief then proceeded on to other business at hand.

The Council voted to close discussions on the Well Number 4 Project hearings. After the approval of the council minutes and payment of city bills, The Council approved and sent the attendance registration request for Loxley Fire Chief, Tim Curry and David Wojciechowski of the Emergency Operations Center to attend the 2008 National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, Fla.

There were a number of applications for proposed amendments to the zoning ordinances, the first of which was a request from Delores Corte and family, and Andy Bertolla and family that was “unfavorably recommended” by the Loxley Planning Commission. The request of each party is to have their specified properties re-zoned from an R-1A (Residential- Single Family) classification, to a B-1 (Commercial-Local Business) classification. The Corte family’s specific intentions for the property are unknown. Andy Bertolla and BBW, LLC (John Warner) have stated their plans to renovate their existing building to include engineering offices and a new warehouse building next door.

Another zoning ordinance amendment was received from Suzanne Alaie to request that the council consider her request to zone her recently annexed property as a B-1 (Commercial- Local Business) classification. Immediate use for the property was not specified. This and all other applications were approved by Council members.

There was also a request from Bayshores Oil Inc., Gas Depot Food Mart for a beer and table wine retail liquor license, which was approved by the council.

Also approved were bids for two EyeCop squad car cameras for Loxley Police units.

All unfinished business will resume at the next Council Meeting on Dec. 10, at 6 p.m.
