LOXLEY — The Loxley Town Council voted Monday to contract with Baldwin County on two paving projects costing over $43,000.
Loxley Superintendent of Utilities Tommy Hudson presented three projects for the council’s consideration on Monday, asking for approval of two of the three projects, which would effectively utilize the town’s $42,000 general fund budget for paving in 2008.
Since County Highway workers will be in the area on other projects in February, the county will contract for labor and equipment costs to help with the paving projects.
Approved at Monday’s meeting included:
— Repaving of St. Alban Avenue (County Road 64 East) from County Road 49 to Highway 59 at a cost of $6,600 for labor and $17,870 for materials at a total cost of $25,530.
— Repaving of County Road 64 fdrom Higway 59 to Railroad Street at a cost of $17,850 for materials only. Labor will be provided at no additional cost for the project.
The measured was approved unanimously with council members Katherine Breeden, Richard Teal and Wallace Sabin, and Mayor Billy Middleton voting for the measure. Council members Derek Middleton and Lloyd Keuler were not present for the meeting.
Also considered at Monday’s meeting was the repaving of Flying K Road from Highway 59 to the end of the pavement at a cost of $4,860 for labor and $13,770 for materials, or a total cost of $18,630.
The council also approved an alarm system for the town’s sewer treatment facilities.
“All we have right now is a light that goes off when there’s a problem,” Hudson said, “but you have to be there to see it for it to do any good. We have had a couple incidents where having an alarm system would have prevented further problems.”
The council voted to purchase eight monitoring units for the town’s treatment facilities from J.H. Wright ^ Associates at a cost of $4,500 per unit or a total cost of $36,000 which would be split into six payments of $6,000 per month.
In other business Monday, the council:
— Received a check from Baldwin EMC in the amount of $117,452.06.
— Approved an on-premise beer license for P & P Promotions Inc. to sell beer at Deep South Speedway in Loxley.
— Approved garbage fee exemptions for two elderly residents in Loxley.
— Authorized Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Glenn Hedden to attend Alabama Turfgrass Association school in Fairhope at a cost of $40.
— Authorized new library employee Debbie Zonker to attend training.
