LOXLEY, Ala. — David Game Coombs, 32, of 15230 Mary Russell Road in Loxley was arrested Wednesday and charged with capital murder in the death of William Grunden, 57, on Jan. 29 on Truck Trail 17 in Loxley.

According to a Sheriff’s Office release, Coombs is charged with one count of capital murder, which includes the robbery charge.

The Sheriff’s Office said, “Investigators believe that Coombs set up a fake gold deal with the victim William “Bill” Grunden of Pensacola. Grunden bought and sold gold by the penny weight”

The Baldwin County Sheriffs Office said, “Grunden came to Baldwin County to meet a client to purchase gold in an amount that exceeded $5,000.”

Another BCSO release said Grunden was shot “with a small caliber pistol.”

The Sheriff’s Office said Coombs claimed he was to meet Grunden to set up a loan of $3,000. Coombs says Grunden did not show up for the meeting.

According to a BCSO press release, “Investigators have the suspect on video later that day purchasing large ticket items with a ‘roll’ of $100 bills in the Foley area.”

Coombs was taken into custody Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the Sheriff's Robertsdale office. He was taken to the BCSO Corrections Center to await a hearing. According to a BCSO Web site he was in jail Thursday afternoon. A bond hearing was scheduled for Friday afternoon.

According to Baldwin County Sherif Huey “Hoss” Mack, Grunden, who is said to be from Pensacola, was found dead beside the driver’s door of his 2005 red Nissan Pathfinder by a hunter.

‘The engine was still running,” said Mack, who said the victim suffered a wound to the head.

If the public has information about Coombs, they are asked to call the Sheriff's office at (251) 972-6802.
