LOXLEY, Ala. — With all four current members of the council present, the Loxley Town Council voted to appoint a new member.

The council voted to accept Mayor Billy Middleton’s suggestion that Michael Allegri be appointed to the Loxley town council to fill the rest of Derek Middleton’s term on the council. Middleton recently resigned.

“We had several people interested,” said the mayor. I recommend Michael Allegri. He’s served two terms on the County Commission”.

The proposal was passed unanimously, and Allegri will take his seat at the next council meeting.

The council also had to deal with the town budget for 2009-2010 at Monday’s meeting.

Major town expenses include the Dispatch Department, $213,450, “General Government,” $585,380, $460.600 for the Municipal Court and $964,269 for the Police Department. Total expenses for the town will be $3,040,352.

Major sources of anticipated own revenue include $300,000 ad valorem tax, $925,000 in sales tax and $325,000 in garbage revenue.

In the “Utility Fund Budget,” also passed Oct. 12, there was $1,487,000 in income from things like sewer and water charges and $2,000 in “return check fees.”

Expenses include $50,000 in bank charges, $70,000 in health insurance and $370,000 in salaries.

The budget was passed unanimously.

Also on the council agenda was a request for $4,200 for the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce to help with the Chamber’s overhead.

The proposal was passed unanimously.

The council also approved expenses for Chief of Police John Cason to attend the Southeastern Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar to be held in Florence later this month.

Cason will be learning from the FBI and with other law enforcement officials about executive leadership, problem solving and dealing with the media.

In other council action, the council

— Approved the minutes of the Sept. 9 meeting

— Approved payment of 53,799.33 in town bills.

— Proclaimed October as “National Head Start Awareness Month” in Loxley. Town attorney Shawn Alves asked that a proclamation encouraging “pro bono” work by attorneys be approved by the council. The proposal was passed unanimously.
