LOXLEY, Ala. — On Friday, March 6, the Loxley Police Department received an odd call.
“We got a call at 12:18 p.m. about a reckless driver on Interstate 10 headed westbound at the 42nd mile marker,” said Lt. Raymond Lovell, a department spokesperson.
That's not so unusual. The Loxley police hear about bad drivers all the time.
“We were told the vehicle was driving erratically and there were no tires on the front,” said Lovell.
That was different.
Two police cars were dispatched to intercept the blue 2004 Toyota Corolla. By this time, the driver had gotten off the Interstate and was headed southbound on Highway 59.
With no tires.
“Sgt. Carry Mitchum was behind the vehicle and put on lights and siren,” said Lovell. “The vehicle failed to yield.”
The other police car, driven by officer Michael Landenwich, got in front of the Corolla. Boxed in, the driver finally came to a stop near the junction of Highways 59 and 55.
“The driver had practically run the rims to the rotors,” said Lovell.
The driver was identified as Leslye Guff, 35, of Bay Minette.
“She said she could not stop,” said Lovell, who added that when the car’s brakes and parking brake were examined, “they worked just fine.”
Guff was charged with reckless endangerment and reckless driving. She is scheduled to appear in Loxley Municipal Court April 16. According to Lovell, she could face up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.
The Toyota was towed to an impound yard.
