LOXLEY, Ala. — A report of a stolen car in Foley led Loxley police officers on a high-speed chase over the Bayway and through Mobile Monday.
The hunt began with the report of a stolen vehicle in Foley and ended with an escape attempt in Loxley.
“We received a BOLO (be on the lookout) for a Ford Explorer stolen from the Wal-Mart parking lot in Foley,” said Lt. Doug Phillips, a spokesman for the Loxley PD.
A Loxley police officer spotted the vehicle heading north on Highway 59 and attempted to stop it, Phillips said.
The chase was on. According to Phillips, the suspect, identified as Derrell Lopez Driscoll, 27, fled, weaving the SUV in and out of traffic at speeds of 90 mph.
“It was extremely reckless driving,” said Phillips.
The suspect got onto Interstate 10 westbound. at speeds Phillips says exceeded 100 mph.
“State Troopers attempted to deploy ‘stop spikes,’” said Phillips.
“Stop spikes” are strips of spikes police officers can deploy to stop a vehicle. They work by shredding the suspect’s tires. Driscoll was able to bypass the spikes and proceeded across the Bayway to Exit 30. He then proceeded to drive, sometimes on the wrong side of the road through Mobile County. According to Phillips, officers from Mobile, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and Prichard police joined the chase.
The vehicle was eventually abandoned off Bay Bridge Road.
“The suspect attempted to flee,” said Phillips. Phillips said that Driscoll was quickly captured. He was brought to Loxley to be charged.
But Driscoll was not done making the morning interesting for Loxley officers.
“During booking, he slipped his cuffs,” said Phillips.
Driscoll fled the Loxley police station, but was, captured about 50 feet from the station, Phillips said.
“He was charged with escape,” Phillips said.
In all, Driscoll is now in the Baldwin County Correctional Facility charged with receiving stolen property, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, attempting to elude police and second degree escape.
And Foley may have their own charges to add, said Phillips.
