FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Pvt. Desmond Morrisette, 19, of Loxley was killed Sept. 14 in a single-vehicle traffic accident on the base. Two other soldiers were killed and two were hurt in the accident, according to an Army press release.

All three of the dead were assigned to the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Fort Bragg.

Morrisette was born in Fairhope, but listed Loxley as his home. He joined the Army in August of 2007 and arrived at Ft. Bragg in February of 2008. He was an automated logistical specialist with Company E, 1st Battalion, 7th Artillery Regiment.

According to Robertsdale High Athletic Director Scott Phelps, Morrisette graduated from Robertsdale High in 2007. His football jersey number was “80.”

“He was a football player, a wide receiver, ran track and was a manager of the basketball team,” said Phelps, who added that Morrisette’s best track event was the “440.”

Phelps remembers Morrisette as, “a very jolly, pleasant, well-mannered kid. The sort of kid you hope your own kids will grow up to be.”

Morrisette’s military experience included basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. and the automated logistical specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Lee, Va.

His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

A private memorial service was held Thursday, Sept. 18, at Fort Bragg’s Faith Community Chapel.

At this time, there is no information on local services.
