LOXLEY, Ala. — The Loxley Police Department will have a new officer in a few months.

According to Loxley Police Chief John Cason, dispatcher Daniel Middleton will be attending the police academy in Mobile later this month.

According to Cason, the cost of the 12-week course will be reimbursed by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. According to Cason, Middleton will become a Loxley police officer when he finishes his training.

Cason also told the council that the recent “Cops on Top” event raised about $28,000 for Special Olympics in Baldwin County and the Loxley and Robertsdale departments raised about $9,800.

The town council, with all members present, voted unanimously to send Middleton to the academy.

The council also approved the application of Mukesh and Rajendra Patel, both of Mobile to transfer a liquor license to the “Merri Mart” on Hickory Lane. According to Mayor Billy Middleton, the establishment was previously known as the “Flying K” truck stop.

In other council action, the council voted to:

— Approve Loxley’s participation in the “sales tax holiday,” a time when certain items for “back to school” are tax-exempt. The holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 6 and end at midnight, Aug. 8.

— Approved a resolution recognizing Concerns of Police Survivors “Fly the Blue” campaign, which asks that municipal, county and state vehicles fly a blue ribbon in memory of fallen officers.

— Approved the minutes of the previous meeting and $172,548.59 in town bills.

— Because of the Memorial Day holiday, the Loxley Town Council work session has been changed to 6 p.m. Monday, May 24, instead of May 31.
