Loxley to appoint new council member

LOXLEY, Ala. — Loxley residents who would like to take the place of Derek Middleton on the Town Council have just a few weeks to get letters of interest to Mayor Billy Middleton or Town Clerk Carol Middleton.

“We will decide (on a replacement for Middleton) at the next council meeting,” said the mayor. “We will then vote on the replacement.”

Derek Middleton’s position became open when he resigned last month. According to a statement that Derek Middleton read to the council when he announced his resignation, his leaving the council was due to “unforeseen circumstances.” Comments made on the council dais at the time Middleton announced his resignation indicated that he had his home “under contract.” He declined to comment further. Middleton held “place 5” on the council.

Mayor Middleton said he has had several individuals approach him about the vacancy.

The meeting had three members of the council in attendance. Katherine Breeden was absent. One of the issues decided by the council was the addition of “section six” to Ordinance 2009-22.

The ordinance refers to the “senior discount” for garbage services in the town, explained mayor Middleton.

“It was unclear if a person could claim more than one exemption,” said Middleton. The amended ordinance now requires a person looking for a reduced rate or exemption to designate his or her principal residence for the discount.

According to the ordinance, seniors must apply for the discount by Oct. 1 of this year. The discount lasts for a full year.

The change to the ordinance passed unanimously.

The council also voted to take up the “Loxley Comprehensive Plan” at a later session.

According to Town Attorney Shawn Alves, the issue is not “time sensitive,” and the council can take the issue up over several meetings.

Loxley Police Chief John Cason announced that the town’s new police cars should be ready at the end of this month. He also asked for a resolution from the council requesting the county change speed limits along County Road 64. The changes will reduce speed to 45 miles per hour and reduce the speed to 35 mph in the vicinity of Railroad Street. Speeds would been be reduced in the vicinity of two crosswalks in town.

The council voted unanimously to request the change.
