Loxley voters overwhelmingly support Sunday alcohol sales

LOXLEY, Alabama --- Voters in Loxley went to the polls on Tuesday and overwhelmingly passed two referendums in support of Sunday alcohol sales.

Around 70 percent of the town’s voters supported both ballot items with preliminary results released Tuesday following the 7 p.m. poll closing.

The town’s three provisional ballots will be sent to the Baldwin County Board of Registrars for certification, after which the town will canvas votes on Tuesday, Sept. 18 and send the totals back to the Board of Registrars for final approval.

The provisional certification and canvasing are not expected to change the results of Tuesday’s preliminary totals, according to the town’s election officials.

Referendum 1, which pertained to off-premise alcohol sales, was approved by a preliminary margin of 69.8 to 30.2 percent with a total of 169 yes votes to 73 no votes in Tuesday’s election. Referendum 2, which pertains to on-premise alcohol sales, was approved by a 70.2 percent margin with yes votes outnumbering no votes 170 to 72.

Baldwin County is one of 12 counties in Alabama to allow Sunday alcohol sales on a city by city basis. There are 26 counties in the state of Alabama that prohibit the sale of alcohol entirely.

In November of 2003, voters in Baldwin County approved a measure to allow the off-premise sale of beer and wine on Sunday. The off-premise sale of hard liquor is still prohibited on Sunday in Baldwin County.

Municipalities and Commission Districts were allowed to vote individually on the measure. The Town of Loxley and Commission District 2, which includes Rabun, Stockton and Tensaw, voted against the measure.

The Loxley Town Council voted in May to approve a resolution placing the referendums on the ballot for the August election.

There was no municipal election in Loxley in 2008 with Mayor Billy Middleton and all council members qualifying unopposed.
