Lunches will benefit Relay for Life

A Box Lunch event to be held Thursday is an effort to wipe out a shortfall of approximately $14,000 in Relay for Life of South Baldwin’s goal. Relay for Life is a signature event of the American Cancer Society that encountered some tough weather  locally back in April.

“The lack of being able to complete the event and have our Relay hurt,” said Zana Price of Foley, who noted Relay for Life was actually rained out twice at Heritage Park in downtown Foley.

The weather-plagued event thus came up about $14,000 shy of the goal of $77,447 for South Baldwin. That’s why Relay for Life participants and organizers are hoping a Box Lunch event on Thursday will get the area closer to its goal since, as Price puts it, “Unfortunately, cancer does not ever downsize.”

Volunteers will be making chicken salad, pasta salad and corn salad today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Then, on Thursday, the box lunches will be made and served at Foley United Methodist Church from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The “Lunch For A Cause” will also include a slice of watermelon and a cookie from Ryan’s, all for $10 a plate.

Lunch orders of three or more will be delivered by volunteers within Foley city limits. On orders of five or more lunches, deliveries will be made to Elberta, Summerdale and Magnolia Springs.

Deadline for Lunch Box orders is today and may be made by calling Allison Fairclloth at 251-928-8650.

Drivers, servers, choppers and “cleaner uppers” are also needed. To volunteer in such a capacity, call Price at 943-1124 or 942-4241.

“Our mission is to sell out,” Price said of the Box Lunch event.

Event organizers point out that the American Cancer Society’s local services are based in large part on funds raised from such events as Relay for Life.
