Lutz is caught in the middle of 10

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Being the fifth of 10 kids can be quite a challenge, said Britney Lutz, a junior at Robertsdale High, whose first day at RHS was Jan. 3.

“Our family just moved to the Loxley area from Gulf Breeze, Florida,” Lutz said. “Prior to moving to Florida we lived in Childersburg.”

The daughter of Bill and Shannon Lutz, Britany’s father is the pastor at the Bay Minette Assembly of God.

“My father’s position as pastor is the reason we’ve moved as often as we have,” she said. “My mom helps him at the church, so in the afternoon I babysit my younger siblings, as the older ones have moved out due to either marriage or college. While keeping an eye on them, I normally help with their homework and other school assignments.”

Lutz said that when everyone was living under one roof their family was somewhat reminiscent of the television show The Waltons.

“It would take 15 minutes just to say goodnight to everyone,” she said. “Of course we did have a way of dragging things out; especially if we weren’t ready to go to sleep.”

Lutz said that each of her brothers and sisters had their own, distinct personality.

“The same holds true for their talents,” she said, “as each one have something that they are really good at.”

While living in Childersburg the Lutz family occasionally went to Wind Creek State Park at Lake Martin for a family outing.

“Down here we have the beach, which is something I’m really looking forward to going to this summer,” she said.

Lutz said RHS was a much friendlier school than Gulf Breeze High.

“I really like my teachers,” she said, “and everyone here has been really nice and welcoming.”

Education is a field that Lutz has expressed an interest in.

“I would much rather work at the K-2 level, as I don’t believe I would be comfortable with the older kids; especially those at the high school level,” she said.

The three career fields that are standing out in Lutz’s mind at the present are education, library science and writing juvenile fiction.

“I’m taking a library science course now,” she said of her job as an aide in the RHS library. “Mrs. Cathy Danner and Mrs. Kelly McCrady have taught me how to check books in and out, how to put them back in order, as well as how to collect fines and sell things like paper and notebooks from the school’s store.”

Lutz said the experience she is gaining, as well as the skills she is learning in the library should prepare her for a campus job when she goes off to college.

“I love to read, and I love being around books,” she said. “I love horror tales, as well as romance. If a book can make me laugh then I’m hooked.”

Lutz said she knew there wasn’t a lot of money to be made as a librarian, but it was the type job she said would probably wake up in the morning and look forward in to going to work.

Her other interest is writing stories.

“I have a pretty vivid imagination” Lutz said. “I can see stories in my mind. I just want to get them on paper and maybe one day find an agent and a publisher who specializes in this genre.”

Right now Lutz is looking at several colleges that have a great College of Education, offer a major or minor in library science, in addition to offering creative writing along with the English and literature classes.

“I plan to take the ACT later this semester,” she said.” I currently have a 3.0 grade point average, but now that we’ve settled in I’ll have more time to concentrate on my studies. I fell behind during the move to Loxley.”

This summer Lutz said she planned on visiting as many college campuses as possible so that she could start narrowing her selections down.
