MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. — Improvements to Magnolia Landing should be complete by spring, according to Magnolia Springs Councilman Ben Dykema.
“We’re going to finish that up in three to four months,” the town’s Public Lands and Beautification Committee chair said in last week’s Council Workshop.
The public water-front park will be located on the Magnolia River, west of the bridge on County Road 49. In the 1800s, the spot served as a docking spot for unloading freight and passengers. The facility is slated to include designated parking spaces, an elevated walkway through wetlands and a pier at the river.
The project is funded by the town’s portion of Deepwater Horizon funding.
During Monday’s meeting, Councilman Bob Holk asked if there might be a way to add a spot for kayaks to launch from. He added that he knew the pier was designed for that purpose, as well as for water testing.
“But it’s hard to launch a kayak off any kind of pier,” he said. “I know we’re way, way late in the game.”
Dykema said he understood Holk’s concern.
“I hear what you’re saying,” he said. “I tell people all the time it’s easier to put a canoe in at Bay Street.”
However, further discussion did not including making such an addition.
