Magnolia Springs firemen lauded

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. — The Magnolia Springs Volunteer Fire Department appears to have ample support from the community.

According to Magnolia Springs Town Councilman Bob Holk, approximately 50 percent of town residents have provided monetary contributions to the department.

“We ask $35,” he announced in a Public Safety report during the council’s regular meeting Tuesday.

He explained that these contributions are supplemental to revenue generated by property tax, which funds the department’s operation.

“This money allows the Fire Department to have a Christmas party and to do things like buy T-shirts for the firemen,” Holk said.

Following the report, Magnolia Springs Mayor Charles Houser commended the department for its work over the weekend.

“The other day, an RV caught on fire,” he said.

The mayor explained that a couple had been traving from Mobile to the Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores when their RV burst into flames along U.S. Highway 98 in Magnolia Springs. However, Houser pointed out, the Magnolia Springs responded quickly and extinguished the fire, although the vehicle was destroyed.

“Everything worked just like it should,” he said.

Also Tuesday, the Magnolia Springs Town Council:

* Approved a financial report for April, which included a bank balance of $92,863.11.

* Approved the town’s participation of Alabama’s Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday.

* Discussed involving the Parks and Recreation Deoartment in the Magnolia Landing improvement project.

* Discussed looking into the portion of the town zoning ordinance that applies to signage on highways.
