MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. - The Magnolia Springs Town Council unanimously agreed to hire Dr. Bob Zeanah for grant research and writing services.
The council discussed the matter at the July 12 work session and hopes the hiring of Zeanah to research potential grants can bring in extra funds for the town.
Mayor Charles Houser said Zeanah would be looking at websites and other avenues "to get us some money."
Under the motion approved Tuesday, Zeneah would work four hours per month for a $45-per-hour rate for a total of $180 per month. The council also can approve any expenditures for grants on a case-by-case basis.
Originally, the motion was for Zeanah to begin the position in October and the term last for six months with the council having to continue the position each six months. However, after some council members thought it would be better to have Zeanah begin researching earlier, the council agreed to begin the position Aug. 1 and last through March 2012 and then begin the six-month terms.
"What if we want to apply for any grants before Oct. 1," Councilman Brett Gaar said.
Councilman Rick Odess noted the "time deal" is just for the researching of grants, not the town applying for grants.
In other news, the council approved:
• the establishment of a Library board and appointment of members. The library board is in association with the planned Magnolia Springs Public Library, which is planned to open in October.
• the expenditure of up to and not to exceed $500 for Arbor Day.
• the purchasing of two radar speed limit signs for $14,000. The signs will be placed along Magnolia Springs Highway.
• entering into a contract with Unified Recovery Group for debris removal in the town after disasters occur.
