Magnolia Springs Library to tout its first year

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS — Magnolia Springs Library will have a milestone this weekend.

“It is our first anniversary,” Librarian Alida Given said in a phone interview.

The occasion will be marked with a celebration.

“We’ll have a barbecue,” Given said, “which will include baked beans, cole slaw and pound cake.”

Plus, a birthday cake with a singular candle will be cut.

But food is only part of the celebration.

“We’ll have a book sale, live music and silent auction,” Given said, explaining that the sale and auction, as well as donations, will benefit the library.

The librarian explained that Saturday’s festivities will include the younger set, as well.

“We’ll have a bounce house for the kids,” Given said, “and coloring and drawing activities.”

Since Magnolia Springs Library opened its doors in October 2011, it has quickly become part of the community.

“This past year, the town has participated,” Given said of the facility, which has been supported by the Marjorie Snook Foundation and the Magnolia Springs Town Council.

That participation has included Magnolai Springs residents of all ages.

“We’ve had a range of programs for children and high school,” Given said. “Plus, we have a monthly book club.”

She also pointed out the program that bridges the generation gap.

“We’ve got our Teen Tech Savvy Group,” Given said.

Plus, the traditional purpose of the library is in use.

“We are now circulating over a thousand items a month,” Given said.

While Given is the sole staff member of the Magnolia Springs Library, she has plenty of help.

“I have a volunteer with me every day we’re open,” she said. “I have eight that work on a steady basis.”

Plus, volunteers come out in full force for special events or when there’s a need.

“A soon-to-be town councilman put up book shelves,” Given said.

All in all, the librarian is pleased with the success of Magnolia Springs Library in its first year.

“It’s just remarkable,” Given said.

Saturday’s anniversary celebration is set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the food. For more information, call 251-965-2305.
