Magnolia Springs Mayor: Plans to adopt budget in September

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. - Magnolia Springs Mayor Charles Houser said there are not plans for the town council to adopt the proposed 2011-2012 fiscal year budget, which is slated at $343,680 in expenses, at Tuesday's council meeting.

The council discussed the budget at the Aug. 9 work session, but Houser said the council probably will move forward with adoption at the September council meeting.

"We think we're pretty close to a final budget and I don't expect any big changes," Houser said.

"We stay up with our budget throughout the year, so it's not like we have to start from scratch each time. It's a fairly easy process for us."

The projected town income matches the expenses at $343,680.

The fiscal year will begin Oct. 2011 and end Sept. 2012. Houser said at the work session the proposed budget would maintain the town's reserve funds of around $154,000.

The 2010-2011 budget was originally set at around $345,000, Houser said.

The proposed expenses for each area are as follows:

• $133,780 for the general government department fund.

• $18,000 for debt services, which includes principal payments and interest expense.

• $85,000 for the Public Works Department.

• $60,100 for Public Safety, which includes police protection, legal counsel and miscellaneous expenses.

• $16,800 for the Parks and Recreation Department, which includes supplies, Riviera expenses and contract labor.

• $18,000 for Environmental Protection.

• $12,000 for the Historic Preservation Commission.

The Magnolia Springs council meets on the second Tuesday of each month for a work session and on the fourth Tuesday of each month for a council vote meeting at Town Hall. Both meetings begin at 5 p.m.
