MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. — The speed limit along West Oak Street and Woodland Avenue in Magnolia Springs could be reduced to 15 miles per hour in the near future.
During Tuesday’s Town Council Meeting, Magnolia Springs resident Nick Shields asked town leaders to consider lowering speeds on those roadways.
“It has been noted that people are not following the 25-miles-per-hour speed limit,” he said.
Shields pointed out that several families with children have relocated to homes along the two roadways, making speeding traffic a danger to children who may wander into the streets while playing.
“It’s easier for us to ask the drivers to slow down than to ask the kids to stay out of the street,” he said.
Shields also estimated that a lower speed limit would only slow travel time by seven or eight seconds.
Discussion of the issue revealed that speed-limit signs are posted beyond the designated areas but not within them.
“There are no ‘children playing’ signs either,” Councilman Ben Dykema said.
Following Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Ken Underwood said the Council would discuss the issue at its next workshop, scheduled for July 8.
