MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. — Drivers passing through the Woodlands subdivision in Magnolia Springs should now have no confusion about the speed limit.
During last week’s Magnolia Springs Town Council meeting, Councilman Bob Holk announced that signs announcing a 15-mph speed limit had been posted in the neighborhood, with one now standing along Oak Street.
In June, resident Nick Shields had asked for speed along Oak and Woodland Avenue to be reduced to 15.
“It has been noted that people are not following the 25-miles-per-hour speed limit,” he said in the June Council meeting.
With his request, Shields pointed out that several families with children have relocated to homes along the two roadways, making speeding traffic a danger to children who may wander into the streets while playing.
“It’s easier for us to ask the drivers to slow down than to ask the kids to stay out of the street,” he said.
Shields also estimated that a lower speed limit would only slow travel time by seven or eight seconds.
At the time of Shields’ request, discussion of the issue revealed that speed-limit signs are posted beyond the designated areas but not within them.
“There are no ‘children playing’ signs either,” Councilman Ben Dykema said at the June meeting.
Last week’s posting of the signs both lowers the speed limit along the residential roads and makes that limit known to drivers.
