Major resurfacing project set to begin this summer on Highway 90 in Robertsdale

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — A major resurfacing project will close at least one lane of traffic along U.S. Highway 90 from Highway 59 in Robertsdale to the Florida state line for up to six months beginning this summer, according to officials with the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The project, which will include planing, resurfacing and traffic striping on the 16 ½ mile stretch of highway, will be let April 29 according to the DOT’s letting website and will cost an estimated $2.6 to $3.2 million.

“We really won’t get an exact figure of how much the project will cost until the bid is approved,” said Ken Owens with AL-DOT’s construction department in Mobile.

It takes about three months once a project is let for construction to begin, Owens said, putting the beginning of the project at around the end of June or first of July. The contract calls for 85 working days; estimated at 15 days a month, the total project will take about 5 ½ to 6 months, Owens said.

While it will ultimately be up to the contractor, Owens said, in all likelihood the project will start at Highway 59 and go in stages closing one lane at a time along the way. There will either be a worker with flags or a pilot car to direct traffic around the construction, depending on visibility.

This is the only resurfacing project in Baldwin County slated for bid opening on April 29, according to the DOT website.  A year-long project for maintenance dredging at Little Lagoon Pass in Gulf Shores is also on the April 29 slate. The project will cost an estimated $1.06 to $1.3 million.
