On Aug. 23, the residents of Robertsdale will have a chance to see first-hand the many capital projects the city has undertaken. Buses will leave City Hall at 4:30 and 6 p.m. and return there, giving those on the tour a chance to see the renovations to the City Hall building.
The tour will include the new $1.4 million waste water treatment plant under construction and the $2.5 million fresh water tank, which will soon be completed.
The U.S. Post Office building on Highway 90, which was completed in May of 2001 and the nearby Public Safety (police department) building, which was completed in June of 2002 at a cost of $1.4 million, will also be on the tour route.
Mayor Charles Murphy said the city nets $35,000 a year from the lease of the Post Office building.
“That has already paid six years of the 20-year mortgage,” he said. He also said annual leases from a cell tower at the waste water treatment plant brings $20,000 a year into the city treasury.
Other highlights of the tour will include the sidewalk project and the many new baseball parks that have been constructed at Garrett Park; the property the city recently purchased to build a new Utility Department building; and the new Cattle and Fair Association project on Fairground Road, as well as property the city has purchased for future expansion.
Murphy said he and the council felt a guided tour would give citizens a chance to see many of the improvements that they might not ordinarily see and they hope the citizens take the opportunity to have a guided tour. City council members and department managers will be on hand to answer questions, he said.
“We thought it would be a good idea to show the citizens how we’ve been spending their money,” Murphy said.
