DAPHNE, Ala. — Daphne police on Thursday arrested a Fairhope man in connection with a stolen vehicle after the suspect reportedly returned to the scene of the crime.

Wilmer Coleman, 56, was charged with third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, first-degree receiving of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless endangerment, Detective Lt. Jud Beedy said.

A 4:50 a.m. alarm at Daphne Mazda prompted patrole units’ response, when police encountered a vehicle leaving the business, according to a news release that said Coleman was captured after a high-speed chase that ended on Papermill Road in Mobile.

The vehicle Coleman was driving had been stolen from the automobile dealer on Monday, according to Beedy.

Coleman — whom police believe is from Fairhope — was identified in connection with a burglary at the dealer, police said.

“He busted a glass out on the window pane in one of their garage doors and lifted the door up,” Beedy said.

“He wasn’t looking for anything specific, he was just looking for anything he could steal or get money from.”

The suspect was reportedly carrying burglary tools — everyday items that could be used to breach locks or barricades — Beedy said, adding that police found a crack pipe in the stolen car.

Spanish Fort and Mobile police departments aided in the high-speech chase, which at times reached 100 mph, Beedy said.

Police are investigating Coleman’s possible connection with other crimes, Beedy said.
