DAPHNE, Ala. — Daphne police arrested an alleged truck thief at 2 p.m. Monday after a reportedly stolen vehicle was found and a short chase ensued.
The search began at 8:30 a.m. Monday when police chased the truck to Patrician Drive in Spanish Fort, where Clayton A. Johnson, 19, of Daphne, jumped from the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, according to Daphne police Lt. Judd Beedy. Johnson was captured at Pinehill Road and Third Avenue in Daphne.
“He knew that he was surrounded and gave up,” he said.
Spanish Fort police, Alabama state troopers and K-9s from Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore aided in the arrest.
Officials said they believe Johnson is connected to a burglary on Whispering Pines Road, where a family was sleeping, and another on Lancaster Way.
The truck — an unknown make and model, Beedy said — had been stolen from Taylor Engineering early Monday morning and the burglary on Whispering Pines Road occurred sometime between 6 and 8 a.m., according to police. The truck was returned to the business before it was stolen again, police said.
A burglary allegedly took place at a house off Lancaster Way in Lake Forest between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Beedy said.
The resident wasn’t home but Johnson was found by someone checking the house to water plants, Beedy said, adding that Johnson — exhausted by that point — probably broke in to get some water.
If Johnson is convicted of the truck theft — a class B felony — he may serve from two to 20 years in prison and pay up to $30,000 in fines.
If he is also convicted of the house burglaries — class C felonies — he may serve from one year and one day to 10 years and pay $15,000 in fines as the court rules, Beedy said.
The family’s presence for one alleged burglary may cause heavier sentencing, he said.
