SUMMERDALE, Ala. — A Summerdale man arrested by a state trooper on an outstanding traffic warrant from Foley Police Department was discovered not breathing while in a holding cell at FPD.
Brett Richard Redding, 37, died on Monday after he was taken to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center after Foley corrections officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.
According to a press release issued by FPD on the date of Redding’s death, the inmate was arrested by the trooper and a Baldwin County deputy on Friday night, Nov. 23. Redding was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by the trooper. When the trooper discovered Redding had an active warrant from FPD, Redding was arrested and transported to the Foley Criminal Justice Center.
At approximately 9 p.m., Redding was booked into the Foley Corrections Center. Statements indicate that after being booked Redding slept in a holding cell, the release said. At approximately 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, corrections officers were informed that Redding was not breathing.
CPR was performed on Redding by corrections officers until an ambulance arrived and transported him to the hospital, where he was eventually placed in the intensive care unit.
Redding was pronounced dead on Monday at approximately 11:30 a.m. The preliminary investigation into Redding’s death has revealed no trauma or external injuries and no “physical altercation” between Redding and law enforcement, the release said.
