Man sought on robbery charge, turns himself in to authorities

DAPHNE, Ala. — A man accused of a parking lot robbery has turned himself into the Daphne Police Department, Detective Lt. Jud Beedy reported.

Willie Dantrel Carstarphen, 19, has been arrested for first-degree robbery and is now at the Daphne Police Department, according to Beedy, who said in a news release that Carstarphen was to be transferred to the Baldwin County jail on Tuesday.

Police earlier this week has been seeking Carstarphen in connection with an Aug. 4 robbery in a fast-food restaurant parking lot. An arrest warrant had been issued for the 19-year-old, who is believed to have approached a female Checkers manager, demanding her money after learning the restaurant’s deposit was located in the store.

At around 9:15 a.m. that day, the woman — whom the Daphne Police Department declined to identify by age or name — was in the process of opening the restaurant when she walked to her car and was approached by a black male with a handgun, police said.

“He walked up to her; he was actually kind of walking back and forth between the McDonald’s parking lot and the Checkers parking lot,” Beedy said.

No surveillance cameras were on the premises, but eye witnesses observed the man, according to police.

“People at McDonald’s … saw him hanging out in their parking lot prior to the robbery,” Beedy said.

The man settled for less than $20 of the manager’s own money, having learned the deposit was in the restaurant, according to the release.

He took the money and struck the woman on the arm with a gun, leaving a small scrape, police said.

Probable cause was established for an arrest warrant on Carstarphen, according to Beedy.

“We have some witnesses … and some statements from different people. I’m not gonna get into all the technical details; that’s still part of an open investigation,” he said.

“We’ve got enough to get a warrant for him.”

First-degree robbery is a Class A felony, Beedy said. The suspect, if convicted, could be sentenced to no less than 20 years in prison, and a fine no more than $60,000.
