SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The Spanish Fort Fire-Rescue Department Auxiliary will host a barbecue fundraiser March 12 benefitting Lt. Jason Hadley.

Hadley, 21, struck a deer while riding his motorcycle home from work around 2 a.m. Feb. 16, but appears to be on the mend after two weeks of close monitoring at USA Medical Center in Mobile. Although he was wearing his helmet at the ome of the crash, Hadley suffered a head injury as well as abrasions on his face, arms, legs and body.

“Jason has made tremendous progress in his recovery. He is fully awake, is up walking, talking and posting on Facebook,” said Fire Chief Roger Few.

Hadley began a weeklong regimen March 2 at Spain Rehabilitation Center on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he will undergo both occupational and physical therapy.

The second-generation volunteer firefighter works as a medical technician at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope and was on his way home from a shift when the crash occurred.

Sheryl Barrios with the auxiliary  said the barbecue fundraiser will last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 12 at Station 1 across from City Hall on Spanish Fort Boulevard. Plates will be $7 and will include barbecue pork, baked beans, cole slaw, roll, dessert and drink.
