Margaret Fern Oldemoppen

Margaret Fern Oldemoppen, 85, went to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on March 14, 2014 after a short battle with pneumonia.

Margaret, also known as Mom, Grandma and Mar was born in Dunlap, Iowa on Feb. 21, 1929 and grew up in a family of nine lively brothers and two sisters.

When she was 12 the whole family moved to California, although no one really knows how many vehicles the trip required.

Margaret attended Leuzinger High School in Hawthorne, Calif., and met her husband Lawrence in front of the bowling alley. His big blue eyes and weekly watermelon delivery stole her heart and they were married soon after.

She was a hairdresser for many years before retiring to Magnolia Springs in 1978.

She thoroughly enjoyed being a grandmother, and her hobbies included garage sales, flea markets and making jewelry.

Although retired she still acted as the parking superintendent for Lawrence, light bulb procurement agent and Walmart bag aficionado (double-bag, double-knotted).

Despite her enthusiastic participation in Bingo, generosity in sharing her winnings and love of the game, she was a sore loser.

She was an amateur poet and greeting card composer, keeping grandchildren, great-grandchildren and any kid nearby amused with anecdotes, jingles and rhymes.

She loved attending Lillian Fellowship Church, especially the singing and was ushered into heaven by comforting words from the Psalms and some of her favorite hymns.

Margaret was preceded in death by Lawrence Norman Oldemoppen, her husband of 59 years; her two infant daughters, Marilyn and Kathleen; and eight brothers.

She is survived by her brother, Dean Weber; sisters, Alice Penny and Charlotte Dornblazer; daughter, Lynn (Kenneth) Ferguson; son, Timothy (Mary) Oldemoppen; grandsons, Jeromy (Adrienne) and Beau (Jennifer) Ferguson and Casey Oldemoppen; as well as seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial contribution in Mrs. Oldemoppen’s name to Summerdale Community Center, 300 E. Jackson St., Summerdale, AL 36580, or the Waterfront Rescue Mission, 2365 N. McKenzie St., Foley, AL 36535.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2014 at chapel of Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Interment will follow the service in Pine Rest Memorial Park.

Arrangements by Pine Rest Funeral Home, Foley.
