Margaret “Peggy” Gould Porter, 96, born Nov. 15, 1914 in Cleveland, died March 16, 2011 in Spanish Fort.

She grew up in Winnetka, Ill., and attended New Trier High School. She graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. degree in 1936. She and Benjamin T. Porter were married in 1937 and they raised their three boys in Glencoe, Ill.

While living on Chicago’s North Shore, she worked at the Chicago YMCA in administration and volunteered many hours at the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, an organization that provides basic medical services to uninsured and under insured children and women who would otherwise not have had access to those services.

After her husband retired in 1973 they moved to Lake Forest, Daphne, where they built a home next to the golf course and enjoyed playing golf and the company of many friends. One of her crowing achievements was winning the best ball tournament at the Lake Forest Club. She was active in the community, serving as a director on the Lake Forest Property Owner’s Association.

After her husband died after nearly 50 years of marriage, she moved to Westminster Village, Spanish Fort. She traveled to many parts of the world with the Westminster travel club and her family.

She was a member of the Mayflower Society, Pilgrim John Howland Society, and the Society of Colonial Dames. She co-authored and published a family history “A Bosworth-Land Family Chronicle, 1620 -1921.”

Survivors include three sons, Ben (Lee), Allen, and Jon (Margaret); eight grandchildren, Tracey (Steven), Jessica, Sarah (Kevin), Allen Jr., Becky, John, Ben, Mary (Michael), and Harvey; and five great-grandchildren, Sam, Brendan, Ian, Natalie and Juliana.

A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church.
