Arthur Carroll Martin, a born in 1922 in Enterprise, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 at his home.
He served his country during World War II and later went on to work for the Bureau of Weights and Standards and was also an aeronautical engineer who worked closely with the School of Aviation Medicine at NAS Pensacola where he was a very integral part of the space program that successfully launched the first monkey into space, spurring further efforts to help the space exploration program.
He was also an extremely active member of his community serving on several organizations, such as the Baldwin County Planning Committee, as a return officer for the election polls, Director of the Robertsdale Stockyard, a lifetime director of the Alabama Cattleman’s Association where he was also voted Father of the Year by the Cow-Belles.
He was a Scottish Rite Mason for many years, and was most dedicated to his position on the Board of Directors for Pen Air Federal Credit where he served for over 25 years on various committees, retiring as chairman of the Board of Directors in 2005. He was also a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and was an active participant in starting the New Hope Cemetery Fund.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Dewey Martin and Willie Aileen Martin; and three brothers, Ernest Martin, Howard Martin and Coy Martin.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Olene Martin; daughter, Judy M. (Jim) Busby; two sons, Arthur Lee (Barbara) Martin and Pete (Tammy) Martin; sister, Linda (Jim) Harper; numerous grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb 9 at New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rodney Smith officiating.
Pallbearers will be Leon Morris, Larry Morris, Gene Barnett, Joe Barnett, Butch Waters and grandson, Bill Sanders.
