Mary Ann Springer Mattox Wright, age 80, of Fairhope, died peacefully at her home on Dec. 27, 2012, following an extended illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Craig (“Buck”) Mattox Jr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wiley Springer of Union Springs; her brothers, John Wiley Springer Jr., Ralph Otis Springer and Don Millard Springer. She is survived by Harold D. Wright of Chancellor, Ala; two children, Ann Mattox (Todd) Chambliss of Fairhope and Horace Craig (Jennifer) Mattox III of Birmingham; five grandchildren, Caroline Ann Chambliss, Mary Elizabeth Chambliss, Sarah Margaret Chambliss, all of Fairhope; Katie Springer Mattox and Benjamin Craig Mattox of Birmingham. A native of Union Springs, she graduated from Auburn University in 1954 with a B.S. degree in English with minors in history and psychology. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She married “Buck” Mattox and they moved to Ozark, Alabama in 1966, where she became an active member of the community. She loved antiques and was regarded as an expert appraiser across the Wiregrass region. She owned Ivy House Antiques in the 1970’s and began and served as chairman of the Ozark Antique Show and Sale in the 1970’s and 1980’s. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ozark where she served as President of the United Methodist Women and the Suzanne Johnson Circle, serving also on the Administrative Board. She loved her family, and her five grandchildren were the light of her life in her recent years. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2012 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Union Springs, Alabama with Chaplain Mark Springer officiating. Gray Funeral Home directed the services. Visitation followed the services at graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Boy Scouts of America or the American Cancer Society.
