Mary “Gladys” (Godfrey) Sims, 87, resident of Gulf Shores and native of Millport, Ala., died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011.
Ms. Sims lived in Fayette, Ala. until 1953 when she moved with her late husband, Johnnie Sims, to Gulf Shores.
Ms. Sims was the first, first lady of Gulf Shores, she owned the first hair salon in Gulf Shores and was a charter member of the Gulf Shores Women’s Club. She also was a member of the Gulf Shores American Legion Post 44, and was an active member of Gulf Shores Church of Christ. Ms. Sims’ hobby was gardening flowers.
She was the daughter of the late Willis Godfrey and the late Trannie (Fields) Godfrey and wife of the late Johnnie Sims.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Leonard) Allen of Bon Secour; four sons, Larry Sims of Foley, Joe (Sandra) Sims of Miflin, Wayne (Dee) Sims of Brookland, Texas and Mike Sims of Gulf Shores; three sisters; one brother; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The visitation for Ms. Sims will be Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, from noon until 2 p.m., with funeral service starting at 2 p.m. at Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley.
Interment will follow in Pine Rest Memorial Park.
