Elections in Robertsdale and Loxley are over before the campaign season even started. In both communities, the incumbent does not have opposition, or a newcomer qualified for the election and does not have an opponent.
The Robertsdale City Council voted to close the election process during their regular meeting Monday morning. All the incumbents have been returned to their positions on the council. Mayor Charles Murphy was also reelected without a challenger.
“I quickly make that motion, before somebody changes their mind,” quipped Robertsdale Council Member Paul Hollingsworth.
Also running unopposed in Robertsdale are Joseph M. Kitchens, Place One; Sue Cooper, Place Two; Aubrey Grant, Place Three; and Brent Kendrick, Place Four.
In Loxley, all the Town Council members with the exception of the incumbent Lloyd Keuler in council Place 2 qualified for election. According to Town Clerk Carol Middleton, Keuler did not requalify for election, but “Jeffrey T. Knight qualified for Council Place 2.”
Because there is a qualified person for each position, no election will take place in Loxley Aug. 26.
Mayor Billy Middleton, along with Council Members Wallace Sabin, Place 1; Katherine Breeden, Place 3; Richard Teel, Place 4; and Derek Middleton, Place 5, are also unopposed.
The community of Silverhill, however, is another matter. People looking for small-town election fireworks, if the signs appearing along Highway 59 is any indication, should look there.
Mayor Timothy Wilson is facing a challenge from Alan R. Norden. On Council Place 1 incumbent Michael Allegri faces a challenge from Bert W. Jones. In Place 2, Steve Brooks, the incumbent, faces a challenge from Tonie Norden. Place 3 incumbent Jared Lyles, is unchallenged. In Place 4, John S. Ullrich Sr. will face challenger Rodney Criswell. In Place 5, Shirley Stephens is unchallenged.
