Mayoral candidates undecided on runoff endorsements

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The five candidates who did not make the runoff in Tuesday’s mayoral election said they have not decided who they will endorse in the Oct. 7 contest, although two indicated they might not make any endorsement in the race between incumbent Mayor Tim Kant and challenger Dean Mosher.

“I’m going to let the dust settle for a few days,” said City Council President Bob Gentle, who came in a close third. “Both candidates came to see me Tuesday after the election. I just don’t know what I’m going to do yet regarding an endorsement. There were some ugly things that went on in the campaign that I’ll have to think about.”

Gentle entered the mayoral contest late during the qualifying period after first stating he had decided not to run. Before deciding to enter the race, he and his wife donated $1,250 to Mosher’s campaign on June 4, according to a Mosher campaign disclosure report.

Mosher received 1,282 to Kant’s 1,248 votes, followed by Gentle (1,085), Chris Warner (834), Jack Burrell (493), Rick Gambino (452) and Vince Valentim (33), according to unofficial election reports.

“I have been contacted by both candidates,” Warner said. “I’m leaning strongly toward not making an endorsement and letting the people decide.”

Burrell also said he was leaning toward not making an endorsement.

“I know that both candidates have wanted to speak with me,” Burrell said. “But right now I don’t plan on making an endorsement.”

Both Gambino and Valentim said they were still thinking about whether to make an endorsement.

The City Council will meet Tuesday at 10 a.m. to consider the unofficial tallies, including 16 provisional ballots that have not been counted. The council is expected to adopt the final official ballots by resolution that day.

This is the first year the city is using the current process for certifying the ballots a week after they were cast, City Clerk Lisa Hanks said. Previously, the canvass results were certified the day following the Tuesday election. The new process, instituted in 2006, allows a week to consider provisional ballots, Hanks said.

One unofficial candidate who did not make the official runoff did receive some unqualified support.

“I will support Willie Bean,” Gentle said, referring to the Fairhope Labrador retriever whose fanciful candidacy garnered more media attention than all human candidates combined.
