DAPHNE, Ala. — The Lady Trojans fell to visiting McGill-Toolen Catholic Friday 55-24. The loss put the Daphne girls at 7-4 while the Lady Yellow Jackets improved to 8-11.
Early turnovers and cold shooting left Daphne down 11-2 after the first quarter and behind 24-13 at the half.
An effective press and better rebounding helped slow the Mc-T attack and the Lady Trojans pulled to within 10 points, 28-18 two minutes into the third period. Daphne forced four-consecutive turnovers but only converted them into three points and the Jackets expanded the lead again to lead 40-21 to start the fourth.
Daphne hit just 1-of-8 from 3-point range and was 5-of-10 from the free-throw line. Amber Yelding scored all of her nine points in the first half.
Kirsten Henton and Brittany McConico added four each and Amanda Patton three for DHS.
McGill's Danielle Harbin had 18 points with 12 rebounds, and Jaz Montgomery added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets.
Daphne coach Scott Smith said coming off an impressive win over Williamson three nights earlier, his team seemed to have a reversal of fortune that sometimes happens.
“That happens sometimes (Like a 180) coming off a big win,” he said. “Well, we didn't show up but it wasn't that we didn't want to, but just couldn't make our shots and turned it over.”
Smith took over the girls program last week.
“They are still going through a transition time with me and just one of those things. We had an off night and when you have an off night against a good team like McGill, it shows and McGill played well and made us look bad.”
