Less than 20 percent of eligible voters in Senate District 32 on Tuesday launched State School Board member Randy McKinney and Eastern Shore businessman Trip Pittman into a primary runoff election set for Sept. 11, according to unofficial returns.
McKinney captured 5,562, or 36 percent, of the 15,431 ballots cast, while Pittman received 4,568 votes, or 29.6 percent.
Rounding out the five-member Republican slate were David Ed Bishop, 2,242 votes, Albert Lipscomb, 2,209 votes, and Don McGriff, 850 votes.
Democrat A.J. Cooper, an Eastern Shore attorney, will square off with the Republican candidate Oct. 16.
There are 87,179 registered voters in Senate District 32 which encompasses most of Baldwin County and meets a sliver of Senate District 22 on the Eastern Shore.
The district configuration creates seven split precincts.
