Meetings set next week to address discipline, engaging teens

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Baldwin County public school system will hold a series of parent meetings throughout the county next week from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be meetings at the Elberta Civic Center for Foley, Gulf Shores and Robertsdale residents on Monday; the Daphne Elementary School auditorium for Spanish Fort, Daphne and Fairhope residents on Tuesday; and the Faulkner State Community College auditorium on Thursday for Bay Minette and north Baldwin residents.

“The main purpose is to help parents be better parents, to assist them in the raising of their children and to give them techniques and strategies in dealing with difficult children for when (kids) get to their teenage years,” Patrice Harris, Baldwin County Schools’ intervention supervisor, said.

The meetings will include a 30-minute question-and-answer session between parents and the guest speaker, Jennifer Kolari.

“We are hoping to have around 250 residents at each meeting. That’s what we’re preparing for,” Baldwin County Public School counseling and intervention secretary Lee Havel said, noting that attendees are not required to register to come to the event, so it’s hard to gauge how many people will show up.

Kolari, a registered social worker and child and family therapist, will be the guest speaker at the meetings. She has been working with teens, children and families for 20 years. She is the author of the book “Connected Parenting: Transform Your Challenging Child and Build Loving Bonds for Life.” The book attempts to help parents set boundaries and discipline their children.

There will be a fourth meeting for all Baldwin County residents on Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center theater.

Refreshments will be available and the first 10 parents to arrive in attendance at all four meetings will receive a free, signed copy of Kolari’s book. Kolari is from Toronto, Canada.
