Meetings set to discuss School Board voter redistricting

Posted

LOXLEY, Ala. — The Baldwin County Board of Education will hold a series of meetings early next week to discuss a proposed redistricting plan for School Board voting districts in Baldwin County.

“We just want to make it clear that this has nothing to do with where your children go to school,” said Dr. Alan T. Lee, superintendent of Baldwin County Schools. “This would be strictly for voting purposes.”

The Baldwin County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a resolution to reconfigure the voting districts with Board President Angie Swiger and members Robert A. Willis, Elmer McDaniel, Norm Moore and Robert F. Callahan Jr. voting for the measure. Board members Frank Trione and Tracy Roberts were not present at Tuesday’s special meeting at the Central Satellite Office in Loxley.

According to Terry Wilhite, communications director with the Baldwin County School System, every 10 years, after each census, school districts are required by Federal law to review and if necessary, redraw voting district boundaries to reflect current population trends.

You can see the proposed modifications and make comment at www.bcbe.org/districts.

The Board also approved a series of six meetings throughout Baldwin County that will provide details of the redistricting plan and an open forum for discussion.

Lee said it is not mandatory for all Board members to attend the meetings.

On Tuesday, Aug. 9 meetings will be held at noon in the library at Bay Minette Intermediate, at 5 p.m. in the library at Rockwell Elementary and 6L30 p.m. in the library at Daphne Elementary School.

On Thursday, Aug. 11, meetings will be held at noon in the library at Fairhope Elementary; 5 p.m. in the gym at Summerdale School and at 6:30 p.m. at Gulf Shores Elementary.

During a presentation during Tuesday’s meeting, it was stated that under the proposed plan, districts would adhere closely to the schools’ feeder patterns and with the exception of areas in Fairhope, Spanish Fort, Daphne and a small portion of Loxley, would follow municipal boundaries.

The hope is to have a finalized plan before the Board’s regular meeting Augl 18 in Bay Minette.

In other business Tuesday, the Board took action on several personnel matters including:

• Approved the appointment of four administrative positions.

• Approved leaves of absense six certificated and classified personnel positions.

• Approved retirements and resignations for 16 certificated and classified personnel positions.

• Approved the transfer/intent to transfer for 19 certificated and classified personnel positions.

• Approved new employment for 53 certificated and classified personnel positions.

• Approved extra work for extended periods for 105 certificated and classified personnel positions.

In other business, the Board approved the low bid of $105,470 from Trane, Tupis Road, Mobile, for upgrading the air conditioning (chiller) system for Elberta Elementary School.
