BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A variety of studies should be completed in weeks at a proposed 3,000-acre megasite in north Baldwin County, and marketing the property for industrial use will begin.

Ed McCallum, representing McCallum Sweeney Consulting, a worlwide site selection consulting company, told Baldwin County Commissioners Tuesday that studies and required reports are near completion for the site.

“The county has 3,000 acres, and 1,500 acres of it are very good,” McCallum said. “We looked at the work force, infrastructure and other factors and this site rose to the top.”

The site, south of Interstate 65 and east of State Highway 287, was identified in the last three years during a nationwide CSX Railroad survey of potential megasites for industry with track, highway and utility components suitable for mass shipping.

Environmental considerations also were a factor.
